A jury of four women and eight men took six hours to find Moetahi Hama Shortland guilty of the murder of Sean Henry Douglas Hilton in Hastings last April. Shortland, also known as Moses Shortland, was the centre of a six-day manhunt after he shot Mr Hilton in the head with a .22 rifle. He was arrested in a bush hut near Ruatoria.
Yesterday he was sentenced to life imprisonment by Mr Justice Greig. Shortland was also found gulity of assaulting two occupants of the flat where Mr Hilton was murdered. He was sentenced to one months jail on each charge. He was also found guilty of a charge of assault with a firearm on the night Mr Hilton was shot.
