"In 1997 he received one of the longest sentences given to a youth at the time. Sinamoni, and three others, called themselves the Central Soldiers Gang and faced 40 charges including rape, sodomy and aggravated robbery.

The court heard how the youths would take beer, marijuana, watch pornographic videos and go "car jacking". They approached couples in parked cars armed with a car jack and tyre iron and robbed them, beat the male and sexually attacked the female."

Fifteen-year-old Thomas Sinamoni was yesterday jailed for 12 years - a sentence thought to be the longest single term given to anyone of his age. The Auckland teenager is a member of the street gang Central Soldiers and has a history of theft, burglary and threatening to kill. He and three friends admitted to pack-raping a woman at Auckland's One Tree Hill and preying on other couples at secluded spots. But he sobbed and looked for his mother in the public gallery of the High Court at Auckland yesterday when prison guards led him away to begin his spell in jail.

Justice Giles gave his friends longer sentences. For Semisi Tongotongo, Joshua Mahoni and Inoke Tangitau, all 17, the term was 14 years. The four unemployed teenagers pleaded guilty earlier to a total of 40 charges, including rape, indecent assault and aggravated robbery, for four vicious attacks spread over 10 days at Mt Roskill, One Tree Hill and Bastion Point. Justice Giles backed the sentences with a strong message. "I am aware that this will deprive you of the more valuable years of your life. But I have little sympathy because you have deprived your victims of the same rights. These are adult crimes and they deserve adult treatment."

Justice Giles said that during the third attack, on March 22, they destroyed the life of a 19-year-old woman, and he described the gang- rape as a "barbaric and animalistic sexual frenzy". Female victims in two earlier strikes may have met the same fate if the youths had not been disturbed. Justice Giles said age must be a mitigating factor. Remorse had been shown, though he was sceptical how genuine it was. During media publicity about the attacks the youths had changed their appearance, washed their car and destroyed clothing to avoid detection.
