Background
From the Otago Daily Times August 26th 2005
A man who poured lighter fluid on to his partner’s leg, then threatened to light it before kicking her on the ankle, was sentenced to six months jail when he appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday. Justin Andre Peta Smith (29), herbal therapist, had admitted a Crimes Act assault on Lorelei Vicki Thompson, on May 21. Counsel Helgi Henderson said the couple’s relationship was now "on hold" and Smith’s partner in Auckland.
Smith was sincere in his desire to rehabilitate himself, and was exploring possibilities, including attending a residential programme. Judge Mary O’Dwyer acknowledged Smith had a good report from successfully completing a Salvation Army Bridge programme. But, she said, it had to be brought home to him that he needed to minimise his violence. Imprisonment was inevitable. In addition to being convicted and jailed, Smith is to pay court costs $130. Leave to apply for home detention was granted. Smith had two previous convictions for assaulting a female, the judge noted
