Background
Waikato Times story 16/09/2006
Judge Robert Spear had harsh words for gang affiliate Keri Snowden in court yesterday. When Dylan Jenkins was stabbed to death in Hamilton last year, Keri Snowden wiped the knife on his shirt, threw it away and said he would take the rap. He didn't. But yesterday Snowden, 23, was labelled pathetic by Judge Robert Spear, who sent him to jail for 12 months after Snowden admitted charges of assault and attempting to defeat the course of justice. "I find you a pathetic individual," Judge Spear said. Fifteen-year-old Richard Barton was on September 1 convicted of Dylan's murder and is serving a life sentence with a minimum non-parole period of 10 years.
Snowden, 23, turned up in court wearing a white shirt with "East" emblazoned in red on the front. Snowden, who identified with the East Side Bloods gang, kicked Dylan Jenkins on his wrist where he wore a blue bandana representing his allegiance to the West Side Crips gang. Dylan was then stabbed in the heart by Barton and died at the scene. "You led the confrontation. You started it," Judge Spear told Snowden. "These are simply groups of young people who band themselves together in an attempt to imitate the US gangs of that type," he said. "It is pathetic to contemplate gangs of this nature being in existence in a community such as Hamilton.
The only redeeming feature for those involved with it are they are young and have not had a good start in life. Perhaps they can be forgiven for some errors in judgment but you are 23 and hanging around with 15-year-olds," he said. Lawyer Kit Clews said Snowden was less developed than some of the youths he was with, but Judge Spear rejected that. "You are a large, well-built man with a significant presence and influence of 15-year-old boys." He said the fact Snowden wiped the knife and threw it away in an attempt to obscure evidence was serious. Snowden was denied permission to apply for home detention.
