Background
From the Daily News January 2008
Southcombe, of Bell Block, was before the judge after admitting a charge of injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. It was about midnight when Southcombe, who was drunk, was at Kawaroa Park in October last year. Without warning, he went up to the 17-year-old victim, punched him in the face, knocked him to the ground and then kicked him in the face and body with considerable force a number of times. Following the attack, the victim, a high school student, had trouble with his school work, difficulty sleeping and has had counselling.
Defence lawyer Kylie Pascoe said home detention had been recommended and would have a significant impact on Southcombe's rehabilitation. His family had been disgusted and sickened by his behaviour and his grandfather, who employs the teen, yesterday paid $2000 in emotional harm reparation to the victim. Ms Pascoe said Southcombe understood his behaviour was unacceptable. Judge Roberts sentenced Southcombe to 10 months' jail. He acknowledged Southcombe's guilty plea, his age and offer of reparation.
