Background
From the Dominion Post 2nd November 2006
A HASTINGS man who tried to escape from police when they found two loaded pistols and a shotgun, a selection of drugs and $40,000 cash in his car has been jailed for two years. Teariki Tevare Taea, 35, pleaded guilty at an earlier court appearance to three charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, aggravated assault, possession of a restricted weapon and ammunition, possessing methamphetamine, ecstasy and cannabis, and driving while forbidden when he was stopped by a police patrol in Hastings on May 27. Lawyer Bill Calver, appearing on behalf of Taea's counsel Tony Snell, told Napier
District Court his instructions were that the money was the proceeds of car sales Taea had made, that he was a firearms collector, and that the drugs were for his own use. The assault charge related to Taea trying to push a police officer out of the way and make a run for it. The officer had fallen to the ground. Judge Tony Adeane said the situation reeked of something sinister and Taea's claim he had loaded 9mm Browning and .357 Magnum pistols with him because he was a collector was laughable. Taea was convicted and discharged on the driving charge.
