Background
From Taranaki Daily News 19th September 2009
Meanwhile, a rare face-to-face apology took place from the dock during the sentencing of Hawera woman Tania Maree Takurua, 41, on charges of aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, threatening to kill and administering a class B drug.
Judge Roberts invited the tearful victim of the burglary and assault to approach the dock after Takurua agreed to apologise in person. All of the charges relate to incidents over two days in Hawera in September last year. After an associate went to an address and stole a five-year-old boy's ADHD medication, Takurua injected him and herself with it. Later that evening she also injected her associate with methadone.
The next day she went to an another address armed with a claw hammer and tried to steal boxes of prescription medication. When she was disturbed by the homeowner she threatened to slit the woman's throat before grabbing her hair and dragging her to the ground. The situation was defused when police arrived and arrested Takurua.
Defence counsel Julian Hannam said the offending could all be attributed to a three-day drug binge. "She very much came a cropper over a three-day period. It was like a bomb going off." Judge Roberts sentenced Takurua, whose previous offending stretched back 23 years, to three years' jail.
From Taranaki Daily News 23rd September 2008
A Hawera woman returned to her Argyle St home at lunchtime on Monday to find a stranger in her house.
She immediately grabbed the phone, called police and followed the female alleged burglar outside so she could tell police where the woman was headed.
While standing in her driveway, waiting for police to arrive, the alleged intruder returned and tried to take the phone from the householder and began abusing her. She was arrested when police found her hiding down the street.
Police said it was extremely helpful the woman called straight away because too often people waited before they called, making it difficult for police to track an offender.
* Tania Maree Takurua, 40, of Hawera, appeared in the Hawera District Court yesterday charged with burglary with a weapon, assault and threatening to kill. She entered no plea and through her lawyer Kelly Marriner consented to a remand in custody to appear again on September 30.
