Background
From Waikato Times story May 4th 2007
A man charged with rape admitted the charge during cross- examination in the Hamilton District Court on Tuesday. Johnson Taoho, 22, of Huntly, was charged with raping a woman in Huntly on July 8, 2006, after climbing through her window. Earlier, he had denied the charge, saying she had invited him into her room and consented to sex. Two days into the jury trial, Taoho broke down and cried during Crown prosecutor Louella Dunn's questions, and when asked "She didn't want you to do this, did she?" he replied "No Miss".
Ms Dunn asked Taoho if he knew what he was admitting and he said he knew the woman didn't want to have sex with him. "You thought `well, as long as I can get away with it, I am going to have sex with her'?" Ms Dunn asked. Taoho replied: "Yeah Miss". He changed his not guilty plea on Wednesday and Judge Phil Connell told the jury before dismissing it that after the admission it would be "no surprise" that the trial was over. "I don't think, as a judge, I have ever had someone in the witness box change a plea as he did." Taoho said he had drunk about 30 stubbies before the incident. He is due to be sentenced on June 16 at the Hamilton District Court.
