A Murupara Tribesmen member will have to spend longer behind bars after being jailed for hitting a man over the head with a broken bottle. Isaiah Teiho, 27, appeared before Judge Phillip Cooper in the Rotorua District Court yesterday for sentencing after pleading guilty at depositions to a charge of aggravated robbery. He and an associate were in Murupara about 4.30pm on October 30 when they noticed a man wearing a red shirt.

They confronted him, punched him in the face and hit him over the head with a broken bottle. The man ran towards a doctor's surgery for help but tripped and fell. Teiho stood on the man's fingers, stopping him from getting away, and took his shirt, cap and cellphone before letting him go. The court heard Teiho was sentenced to two years and six months in jail on July 16 for another aggravated robbery.

Defence lawyer Ian Farquhar told the court his client conceded the incident was a serious one. "There was physical violence, punching and striking causing serious injuries - lacerations to the scalp requiring stitches and bruising to the face," he said. Crown prosecutor Sarah-Louise Wootten said it was a "street robbery" involving a verbal exchange followed by violence. "It was an opportunist incident," she said. Judge Cooper said it was a serious robbery with "gang overtones" and sentenced Teiho to 18 months' jail to be served on top of his existing sentence.
