Sentenced to six years in May 2009
Background
From the Manawatu Standard 5th May 2009
He attacked an 18-year-old as she was heading home to Woodville, and committed
assault while on bail. A former national boxing champion
will spend the next six years in prison for raping an 18-year-old woman.
Dylan Michael Templeton, 21 - who won a New Zealand light welterweight title in 2003 and travelled with the junior team to Tahiti - was sentenced in Palmerston North District Court yesterday. He pleaded guilty to rape on the first day of his trial in March, after the complainant was part-way through giving evidence.
His teenage victim, 17 at the time of the attack, told the jury how Templeton had taken her to a dark and secluded grass area off Main St on the evening of May 16 last year. She had been walking toward Napier Rd to hitchhike home to Woodville when she was approached by Templeton and his friends, who were drinking. When the two were left alone, Templeton raped the woman and then fled with her cellphone.
Judge John Clapham said it was an aggravating feature that Templeton had used excessive force and threats on the "naive, vulnerable young woman" when a member of the public came within earshot during the rape. She remained upset and her relationship with her father had suffered since the incident, he said.
But Templeton had some insight into his own background and had shown remorse and a desire to apologise to the woman for his "unacceptable conduct", Judge Clapham said. The ex-Palmerston North Boxing Club member was also sentenced to three months' jail on two assault convictions relating to an incident while he was on bail for rape.
Templeton had to be pulled off one victim after he knocked him to the ground and beat him until he was unconscious, Judge Clapham said. Templeton had "considerable boxing skills" and showed he had the ability to follow rules in the sport like keeping fit, training and meeting targets.
Templeton had a rapid rise to North Island and national representative boxing ranks in 2003 after only a season in the sport. He won 20 out of 25 fights during his career.
From the Manawatu Standard 17th March 2009
A 21-year-old man pleaded guilty to raping a teenage girl after she spent the
morning giving evidence on the first day of his trial yesterday.
A previously well-dressed Dylan Michael Templeton, 21, entered the dock after the lunch break with a loosened tie and ruffled shirt as he changed his plea in the Palmerston North District Court. He cried as the jury panel was discharged and he was remanded in custody until a sentencing date was set.
His 18-year-old victim, who was 17 at the time of the attack, told the court how Templeton had taken her to a dark and secluded grass area off Main St on the evening of May 16. She had been walking towards Napier Rd to hitchhike home to Woodville when she was approached by the defendant and his friends, who were drinking. The two were left alone, but she was promised his friends would be back soon to give her a lift, she said.
"He said I was real pretty and he hasn't seen a pretty girl in a long time . . . like he was trying to sweet- talk me. All I wanted was to get a ride home." During the attack, he looked at her with the "creepiest smile on his face". She recalled he said: "I thought you wanted it."
"I knew that something bad was going to happen . . . He said, 'You either do it or I will make you do it'." When a man walked past them, he lay on top of her and covered her mouth so she could not call out to him, she said.
After the rape, Templeton took off with her cell phone and jumped into his friends' car that had returned to collect him. "I didn't know what to do, I felt sick and all dirty and yuck."
Crown prosecutor Paul Murray said when the accused was spoken to by police, he "spun a story for over an hour and a half, laced with lies", until police revealed they had his DNA. It was then that he said it was consensual sex, but he covered it up to protect his relationship with his partner and stepdaughter.
Defence lawyer Andru Isac said his client was "by his own account a self- confessed liar and a thief, but he is not a rapist and is utterly innocent" "It would be wrong to think of this case as some kind of sexual predator lurking in the bushes." Templeton was remanded in custody until sentencing.
