A Northland man who assaulted, raped and sodomised his partner in front of her child in a four-day reign of terror has been sentenced to 12 years jail. Maaka Junior Tepania’s claim that he had since found god little mitigation when he appeared for sentencing before Justice Salmon in the High Court at Auckland yesterday.
Tepania, aged 30, had earlier pleaded guilty to three counts of rape, three of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection and three of assault with a weapon after holding his de facto wife prisoner at a house at Taemaro Bay, near Mangonui last January. He also admitted a charge of indecent assault and assault on woman in an unrelated attack at a Kaitaia supermarket last November.
Tepania’s lawyer Grant Anson, said the accused had a long criminal history, including several conviction for attacks on women, and believed his family were cursed.He said a psychiatric found Tepania exhibited, psychopathic tendencies, becoming aggressive and pathologically jealous when his relationships with women were under stress.
The prosecutor Kim Thomas said Tepania had been on bail for earlier assaults on his partner when the offences happened. Mr Thomas said Te Pania was a risk to women he believed had been unfaithful to him or did not come with his wishes. He had tried to commit suicide at least 12 times.
Justice Salmon said Tepania had punched, kneed, kicked raped and sodomised his victim in a terrifying and humiliating attack, which was seen by two year old child. Tepania was sentenced to 12 years on the charges relating to his partner, and one year for other charges, the prison term to be served concurrently.
