In court yesterday, Tepu was also sentenced to two years' jail for causing Ms Ihaka grievous bodily harm with intent.
The sentences are to be served concurrently.
Ms Ihaka died on November 27 last year after Tepu (24) saw police bringing her home after she had laid an assault complaint against him.
Tepu admitted he meant to hurt her and stabbed her repeatedly using two knives, one of which he left embedded in her back.
