Joseph Stephenson Thompson, 36, a cleaner and storeman from Mt Albert pleaded guilty to a 129 charges of which 71 were of a sexual nature. The youngest of his victims was aged 10, the oldest 43. Thirty-two of his offences were against people who were 16 or younger.

His family were apparently taken by surprise when Thompson was charged, having no idea of his nocturnal habits. He made some remarks which likened his need for sexual gratification to the fact that when he was hungry for a feed, he went into the kitchen and got one.

He has cooperated fully with the police since his arrest, having confessed to a significant number of crimes which the police did not know about. Several of these were rapes, about which no complaints had been laid. Several of the victims were raped more than once on different occasions.

Mr Justice Fisher sentenced Thompson in the High Court in Auckland to the most severe penalty for any crime since the abolition of capital punishment. For the offences committed before 1 September 1993, Thompson gets a fixed jail term of 30 years. For the later offences, he is sentenced to preventive detention with a minimum of 25 years before he is eligible to be considered for parole. The judge told Thomas that it was quite possible that he would spend the rest of his life in prison.
