Background
The Auckland High Court was told Tipuia had argued with the victim, then decided to seek revenge by Tipuia and his mates luring him to a spot under the south-western motorway where they blindfolded the victim who thought he would go drinking and playing games with them. The group viciously beat the victim, threw rocks at him causing him to lose conscious before Tipuia got a knife and twice silt the boy's throat. The boy fortunately managed to get to the road and was hospitalized. Justice Frater fixed a starting point of 12-13 years but reduced it due to Tipuia's early guilty plea and co-operation with police.
