A YEAR ago, Manaia teenager Lionel Morgan Tito was given a final chance in court and told to make the most of it. The 17-year-old had just been convicted of burglary and receiving, sentenced to community work and ordered to undertake supervision. Twelve months on and Tito was back standing in the dock of the Hawera District Court yesterday. He had repaid that final chance by wrapping a T-shirt round his face, arming himself with a large stick and trying to rob a female shop assistant of cigarettes. The attempted robbery left the young woman traumatised.

A week earlier he had gone to a corner dairy, jumped the counter and tried to steal lollies before being chased away. It was a fortnight after Tito and an associate assaulted a man for drugs and burgled a Palmerston North hair salon of more than $2000 worth of products. He had also taken off from a service station without paying for a full tank of diesel. He has denied other charges, including the robbery of another Hawera store. Judge Allan Roberts remanded Tito in custody to appear for sentence and a pre-depositions hearing on June 18.
