A Hamilton policewoman assaulted by a man she had pepper-sprayed spent five days recovering from the attack, a court was told yesterday. The attacker, Kyle Maafu Tuhua, 19, unemployed, of Hamilton was yesterday sentenced to six months in prison after pleading guilty to assault and other charges. He was appearing for sentencing before Judge Robert Wolff in the Hamilton District Court having admitted charges of breaching the city's liquor ban, assaulting a parking warden, disorderly behaviour, assault and resisting arrest. Judge Wolff said Tuhua was seen at the city's transport centre with an open bottle of beer earlier this year.
He started abusing members of the public and shoulder barged a parking warden. When police arrived, a female officer told Tuhua he was under arrest. But he walked away. She warned him she would use pepper spray if he did not stop. He did not and she sprayed him. Tuhua then turned on her and swung his arm into the side of her head. She suffered concussion. Tuhua's lawyer Andrea Jones said the bad attitude a probation officer had noted was at odds with her experience of him. She said he had almost finished a dive course and wanted to get a job in that field. Judge Wolff said Tuhua's behaviour was "purely unacceptable". "You need to realise that alcohol is about to ruin your life unless you do something about it," he said.
