Two Levin men appeared for trial at Palmerston North District Court yesterday accused of assaulting two people and seriously injuring another. Randall Clinton Waho and Mathew Carl Hemi-Bateman are charged with two counts of assault and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm following a fight at a Hokio Beach party in June last year. Hemi-Bateman is denying all the charges, but Waho pleaded guilty to one assault charge -- that he hit a woman -- at the start of the trial. He is denying the other two charges.

Crown prosecutor Ben Vanderkolk, in opening the trial, said the two men -- along with three others who are not involved in the trial -- returned to a party at the beach settlement where Hemi-Bateman had earlier been in a fight. Their aim was "to use violence on one or other of the occupants of that house". They knew a fight was likely upon their return "because it was unlikely they would be received at that address without any hostility or violence", he said. In the course of the resulting melee, two people were allegedly punched, while a third was hit with a baseball bat "to serious and devastating effect". The baseball bat was broken in two in the course of the alleged attack.

Mr Vanderkolk said the pair could not argue self-defence as Hemi- Bateman had left the party after the original fracas -- at which he claims he was attacked with a knife -- then returned with reinforcements "solely to inflict further and escalating violence". Hemi-Bateman allegedly told police he had taken Waho back to the party to "make sure it was an even fight". Waho had gone with Hemi-Bateman "effectively to start the fight all over again". Waho is represented by David Cameron, Hemi-Bateman by Yvonne Summers. The trial is set to run until Thursday.
