Three men have each been jailed for three years and 10 months for the aggravated robbery of two German tourists near Hicks Bay on the East Coast in 2003.
Wiremu Joseph Gary Gladstone, 23, Hayden Jared Wanoa, 20, and Beau Robert Ngakapa Hooper, 21, were found guilty by a jury in June this year. In the High Court in Giborne yesterday, Justice Venning said the tourists, who had been asleep in their campervan at a roadside reserve when they were robbed, continued to feel repercussions from the attack.
He said the offenders would have been better to acknowledge their involvement at an early stage which would have allowed him more flexibility in sentencing. The trial had been especially expensive with a witness returning from Germany to give evidence. The judge said the offending was aggravated by the use of violence to break in to the tourists' campervan and in order to overcome their resistance.
