Background
From the Christchurch Press 23rd November 2005
A man has been jailed for a robbery that happened after he came across a group with stolen prescription drugs and grabbed them for himself. Shane George Whittaker, who admitted a charge of robbery, was jailed for 21 months for what Christchurch District Court Judge Colin Doherty called "thieves robbing thieves". Whittaker came by chance on people who had a large quantity of illicit prescription medicines and took the opportunity to help himself to them, the judge said.
The drugs were in a bag held by the female occupant of a car, and Whittaker, a drug user who was stoned at the time, wrested the bag away and took off. Lawyer Raoul Neave said Whittaker had an "appalling" background. He had had a wake-up call because his son was in social welfare care, potentially heading down the same road Whittaker had taken, and he wanted to be able to care for the boy, Neave said. The judge said Whittaker had nine previous violence-related convictions. Whittaker accepted a life of drugs and violence was not in his interests, but could not seem to help himself.
