Sentenced to 3 years 9 months in July 1999
Background
From the Evening Standard July 3rd 1999
A MAN who visited his former partner on his birthday and sexually violated her while pressing her for sex was jailed for three years and nine months yesterday. Bowen Charles Wi, 31, aviation technician, Palmerston North, had been found guilty by a Palmerston North District Court jury, and was sentenced yesterday by Judge T M Abbot. The judge said it was clear from the evidence in the trial that there was fault on both sides of the relationship.
But Wi was under a protection order when the incident occurred in November 1998, and had previously been convicted of breaching it and assaulting the woman. That was an aggravating factor. Wi had gone to the woman's home with the unreasonable expectation he would receive a birthday present of sexual relations. He had then sexually violated her, after being told to leave. In sentencing Wi, the judge said he would take into account the seven months already served by Wi on custodial remand.
