A teenage intruder who attacked a man with a hammer during a home invasion in Hastings last year was jailed for six years today. Mario Michael Wilson, 19, unemployed, was sentenced by Judge Geoff Rea in Napier District Court after pleading guilty to aggravated burglary, robbery and wounding and attempting to pervert the course of justice. Early on December 15 Wilson and an associate were stealing property from a home while its occupants slept. When a male occupant disturbed the burglars Wilson's associate fled but Wilson himself fought the man. In the struggle Wilson hit his victim in the face.

The fight continued into the garage where Wilson picked up a hammer and bashed his victim. The man collapsed with head injuries and Wilson fled on a bicycle he had taken from the property .He was picked up a short time later by police. Judge Rea said the facts made "chilling reading". He said Wilson had committed a home invasion and had refused to name his associate but noted Wilson had apologised for his actions. Earlier, lawyer Bob Quilliam said Wilson had not intended to hurt anyone when he broke into the house. He had also entered an early guilty plea. Wilson was sentenced to six years on the three aggravated offences and two years for perverting the course of justice, to be served concurrently.
