ROTORUA -- A man convicted of kidnapping and causing grievous bodily harm swore and hit the walls of the High Court at Rotorua after being sentenced to eight years jail. A jury had earlier found Rikki Wilson, 28, guilty of kidnapping and causing grievous bodily harm to his former partner on June 25 last year. However, he was not found guilty of raping her.

Prosecutor Rob Ronayne said Wilson had kidnapped the woman twice - - once from State Highway 1, and also from her brother's Taihape home. "This brazen offence involved severe violence and occurred against a background of a protection order," he said. Wilson's smashing of a door in the victim's brother's home, and his dragging the victim to his car, fitted the definition of a home invasion which meant a starting point for sentence of 10 years was appropriate, Mr Ronayne said. When police found the victim in a Mount Maunganui motel unit on June 27, she was drifting in and out of consciousness and severely injured, he said.

Defence counsel Paul Mabey, QC, said the "lead" offence was not the kidnap but the wounding charge. The victim and Wilson had arranged to meet at her parents' Taihape home. Wilson had not left his Auckland home with violence in mind. "Something went wrong and it is clear Rikki Wilson is a sad example of the perpetuation of the cycle of violence," Mr Mabey said. "He inflicted injury with intent but it was clearly flavoured with spontaneity." The victim had suffered extensive injuries and had to spend four days in Tauranga Hospital. Justice Potter said any man who used his strength and aggression against a woman could be described only as a bully and a coward.

At the 11th-hour Rikki Wilson, 35, pleaded guilty to three burglary charges in the Palmerston North District Court yesterday. The matter was initially set down for a trial. After a change of plea, it was called off and a throng of jurors were sent home. The burglaries occurred on December 2, 2004, when three properties were targeted in the Milson area. At one property it is understood expensive jewellery was stolen. Judge Alastair Garland sentenced Wilson to three years and three months' jail.
