Background
From the Nelson Mail 20th May 2009
A retired Stoke man has admitted six sex offences, the earliest of which dates back to 1959. Brian Noel Winter, 76, admitted four charges of sexual violation and two charges of indecent assault when he appeared in the Nelson District Court yesterday. The sexual violation charges relate to incidents involving the same victim in 2000, 2002, 2005 and 2007, as does one of the indecent assault charges which also occurred in 2005.
The other indecent assault charge relates to an incident between March 13, 1959, and March 12, 1960, against a girl then aged six. The summary of facts was not read in court. Detective Ruth Collins of the Nelson CIB said outside court that the two female victims had come forward separately.
She said she was pleased Winter had spared the victims going through the trial process by pleading guilty. "The victims are happy with that." Defence lawyer Steven Zindel asked for Winter to be remanded on bail and that a pre-sentence report be prepared. As well as that report Judge Richard Russell asked for Winter's suitability for home detention to be assessed. He told him that just because home detention was being investigated, it did not rule out the possibility he would be sent to jail. Winter was granted bail and will reappear for sentencing on July 24th.
