Sensible Sentencing Trust
(26th November 2005)
The choice of New Zealand First and United Future as partners to help Labour govern over the next three years has the support of the Sensible Sentencing Trust.
In the first public comment on the topic since the Election the Sensible Sentencing Trust has issued a statement saying the Labour / New Zealand First / United Future coalition was the only sensible choice the Prime Minister had.
"The steadying influence and safe hands of Peter Dunn mixed with Winston’s hard line on law and order will ensure the social engineering warm fuzzy policies of the last six years would be a thing of the past," said Trust spokesman Garth McVicar.
"The alternative of a Labour / Greens coalition with criminals dancing in the streets smoking cannabis while they abused and victimized law abiding citizens does not bear thinking about."
Mr McVicar said the New Zealand First influence was already starting to show with the announcement of 1000 more front line police and a review of Home Detention and the age of criminal responsibility already promised.
The Sensible Sentencing Trust had met with all political parties before the Election to ensure law and order was high on the political agenda. Mr McVicar said the Trust had targeted Hawke’s Bay to expose the way a number of victims had been treated by the Labour Government. This resulted in both sitting members being rejected by voters.
"We are very happy with the message the voters delivered, it would be a very foolish Government that continued to ignore the voice of the people. From the Trusts point of view we don’t particularly care who governs, as long as providing justice for law abiding citizens is No 1 on the agenda."
Mr McVicar said the Sensible Sentencing Trust is looking forward to working with the new government to ensure better treatment for Victims of crime and the continuation of the Justice Reform work that is now well underway.

Garth McVicar
