escalating violence in our community

Violence thrives in the absence of respect for human rights and good governance says the Sensible Sentencing Trust.
Kelly Te Heuheu Maori Crime Specialist for the Justice Watchdog says, "We often talk about how a culture of violence can take root. Violence is more pervasive and widespread in societies where the authorities endorse the use of violence through complacency towards crime with the absence of tougher sentencing and acceptance of parole and bail for violent offenders."
"We cannot let this continue - complacency must be abolished."
"We owe our children our elderly and ourselves – all vulnerable citizens in any society – a life free from violence and fear. In order to ensure this, our Government and law enforcement authorities must be tireless in their efforts to attain peace, justice and prosperity for our country."
Violence can be prevented. Violent cultures can be turned around; individuals can make a difference, providing the governance of our country leads the way.
"Only then will we transform the past century’s legacy of violence and fear into a tragically learnt cautiounary lesson," Mrs. Te Heuheu said.
