SST SUPPORTS POLICE ASSOCIATION

The Sensible Sentencing Trust is supporting the Police Association's call for harsher penalties for fugitive drivers including instant jail and vehicle seizure.

Following the death of Sergeant Derek Wootton on Friday after he was struck by a fleeing car Police Association president Greg O’Connor said he would be seeking political support for harsher penalties to make New Zealand safer.

Trust Spokesman Garth McVicar said the present situation of lawlessness on the streets must be stopped. "If that means locking up more law-breakers then that is a price I am sure New Zealanders would be happy to pay, the public are sick and tired of the politically-correct approach to crime."

"The PC brigade is now getting their just deserts; crime is rampant, violence is escalating and good police officers are being killed by criminals who know that if they are caught the wet bus-ticket sentence makes it all worth while."

"This gung-ho attitude is a direct consequence of political correctness."

McVicar said the Sensible Sentencing Trust would offer total and unconditional support to assist the Police Association in its bid to make New Zealand's streets safer.
