News that one of Nia Glassie’s tormentors is to go free infuriates many, and is sending the wrong message.
"Oriwa Kemp’s release is outrageous and is once again sending the message that one’s life is not really that precious", says Leah Matena, Christchurch Sensible Sentencing Trust Spokesperson.
"Her release is appalling and sends a confused message to the community. We are supposedly not tolerating family violence and violence against children, and yet this vicious offender is released after only five months for torturing a young innocent!"
"Well, I am confused with this mixed message. It is not ok to smack a child, but it is ok to torture one and watch her die? Oriwa Kemp may have whanau support and a job, but have the parole board already forgotten it was whanau that killed this beautiful child?"
Isn’t it time the sentencing laws were changed, say no to parole, time for offenders to serve the full judge given sentence!"

Leah Matena
