In lamenting the number of attacks on Police Officers going about their job, Police Minister Judith Collins blames the media reporting on Police conduct leading to a lack of respect for the Police, and also specifically mentions the number of people in the community who are on methamphetamine.
Sensible Sentencing's Spokesperson on Drug Issues, Christine Davey, suggests that Police can easily remedy both concerns. In the first instance individuals in the Police Force should ensure that their conduct is beyond reproach, and secondly, Community Police should help families intervene in illicit drug use before that person’s behaviour results in someone being hurt.
It is plainly obvious from daily News items all around the country that the “P Plan” has not put a dent into “P” use, as promised – which is not surprising given that none of the Government's 4 priority areas target people currently using “P” who do not want help to stop.
As long as there is a Demand for methamphetamine, someone will supply it.
Ms Davey urges Police to come to the assistance of families desperate for help to stop their family members using “P”. The sooner this behaviour is intervened with, the easier it will be to achieve a positive outcome for the Users, their families and the whole of the country.
