The Sensible Sentencing Trust’s "Judge the Judges" website will go live from Monday 6th May.
The site has been developed to encourage public awareness, education and reflection on Judicial decisions. Sensible Sentencing Trust spokeswoman Ruth Money today said: "Public confidence in the Judiciary can only be maintained through transparency and understanding, hence this site serves to educate the public by providing summaries of cases we have been able to access."
“The cases on the website include sentencing notes to inform the public and encourage them to consider the Judge’s reasoning. The public can then 'Be the Judge'."
"The hysterical over-reaction from the Auckland District Law Society and the NZ Bar Association to our plans to launch 'Judge the Judges' was completely misguided. The site was always intended to be a measured, accurate and informative resource to record Judicial decisions and encourage debate", said Ms Money.
The false claim by these groups prior to launch, that 'Judge the Judges' was going to be "little more than on-line talk back radio" was an ill-informed statement.
'Judge the Judges' will be updated regularly with both new and historical cases to ensure the public conversation and education continues.
Regards,
Ruth Money
