After a five day trial Bannister was found guilty, but when he appeared for sentencing in the Wanganui High Court he accepted responsibility for his crimes and said he was remorseful. However the judge said the defence used during the trial was that the offences had not taken place and the Crown submitted very little weight should be put on any expression of remorse.
