A former Opotiki man who admitted the repeated rape and murder of two New South Wales schoolgirls will spend a minimum 35 years in jail, but parents of the girls said the sentence yesterday brought them no joy.

Victorian Supreme Court judge Justice Frank Vincent sentenced father of three Lindsay Haoni Beckett (24) to life imprisonment, with a minimum non-parole period of 35 years, for the murders of Lauren Barry (14) and Nichole Collins (16) in October last year. One of the girls' mothers told Beckett: "I hope you rot in hell" as he was led from the courtroom by prison guards.

Outside the court, Graeme Collins, father of Nichole, said it was a reasonable result but provided no joy. "There were no winners today," he told reporters. "Lindsay didn't win and we've lost our girls."

This is an interesting case as it demonstrates how much tougher Australian sentencing has been with offenders like this. We are only starting to catch up now. He will be at least 58 on his release, and will have spent most of his life in prison, prevented from attacking anyone else. He will be deported here, only fair considering that the Australian taxpayer will have footed the bill for the protection of New Zealanders from this creature for at least 35 years. His co-offender Camilleri was sentenced to life without the chance of release on parole.
