A 48 year old Hastings man convicted of sexual indecencies involving two six year old girls was yesterday jailed for 20 months. Norman Alan Bristow appeared before Judge Mark Perkins in the Hastings district court and was sentenced to 20 months prison for a charge of permitting one of the girls to do an indecent act upon him and a concurrent term of a year's prison for performing an indecent act with intent to offend.

A Police summary of facts said Bristow was a friend of both the girls families and that the seperate offences occurred in the childrens own homes. Lawyer Tini Clark, for Bristow, said the offending was "completely out of character" for him. He admitted the offences straight away and immediately sought help. She said he was remorseful and acknowleged the effects of his actions on the children.

Judge Perkins said Bristow clearly abused his position of trust. The two young girls were seriously traumatised and were now in need of long term counselling. He said the offending showed paedophilic tendencies and a psychiatric report confirmed he needed continued counselling for personality disorders which stemmed from his background.

Offending like this raised feelings of disgust in the community and a deterrent sentence was necessary, Judge Perkins said. Both offences were admitted to at an earlier court hearing. Leave to apply for home detention was refused.
