Background
From a Dominion story 22 December 2001
A Strathmore technician who pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a young girl during a four-year period was sentenced to three and-a half years in jail yesterday. Wellington District Court was told that Stephen Michael Brown, 43, had been regarded by the girl and her family as an honorary uncle. He pleaded guilty to one representative charge of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection, one representative charge of indecent assault, and four other charges of indecent assault.
Defence lawyer Bruce Davidson told the court credit should be given for Brown's early guilty plea, which spared the complainant the trauma of going through a trial. He said Brown also wanted to offer her $5000 to help offset costs such as counselling. He felt genuine remorse, and the offences predated his conviction in 1992 for a similar offence.
Crown prosecutor Mark O'Donoghue said the complainant did not want anything from Brown. He asked Judge Marion Frater to note passages in a privately prepared psychological report that there still seemed to be an element of risk of Brown reoffending. Judge Frater said the offending began when the complainant was eight, and continued over four years.
