Waikato Times story July 2002
A former Te Kuiti counsellor has been jailed for 18 months for indecently assaulting a 9-year-old girl.
Bryce Butler, 35, was found guilty by a jury earlier this year of indecently assaulting the girl twice, at his home and while he and his wife were visiting her home. He was also found guilty of permitting the girl to do an indecent act on him.
During sentencing yesterday, his lawyer Nitin Deobhakta said his client's life had been shattered by the the charges and asked Judge Robert Spear to take into account the suffering his wife and family had and would be subjected to as a result. He said Butler had worked hard at reconstructing his life following the charges and was studying at the Waikato Institute of Technology and had an $18,000 student debt. Crown prosecutor Mark Sturm said while Butler may be distraught and refer to his life as shattered "he appears to show no remorse".
Mr Sturm said Butler had previous convictions - one in March this year for possessing objectionable material and another for importing prohibited goods. Judge Spear said the jury had rejected Butler's evidence that the complainant's allegations were malicious. He ordered Butler to provide a blood sample for a police databank.
Waikato Times story January 2002
A Hamilton counsellor yesterday denied two charges of indecent assault on a 9-year old girl and inducing a young girl to perform an indecent act on him. Bryce Butler pleaded not guilty to the two charges during a depositions hearing at the Te Kuiti District Court in front of community magistrates Murray Loewenthal and Richard Holt.
It is alleged the indecent acts took place in Otorohanga during September 2000. The community magistrates suppressed all evidence, provided to them in written statements. The 34-year-old Hamilton man was remanded on bail until March 14, when a date will be set for trial in the Hamilton District Court. Butler was given several bail conditions, including that he must remain at his current Hamilton address, and is not to communicate with the victim or her family or drink alcohol. He is also not allowed to work as a counsellor.
Waikato Times story February 2002
A former counsellor has been charged with possession of child pornography. Bryce William Butler, 34, appeared in the Hamilton District Court yesterday on two counts of possessing pornographic images involving children, on computer hard drives and floppy disks. He entered no plea and was remanded at large to 6 March.
Earlier, in a depositions hearing at the Te Kuiti District Court in January, the unemployed Hamilton man also pleaded not guilty to two charges of indecently assaulting a 9-year-old girl and inducing her to perform an indecent act on him at Otorohanga in September 2000. He was remanded to March 14, when a date will be set for trial in the Hamilton District Court. Butler is not allowed to work as a counsellor as part of his bail conditions.
