The attack on the pensioner and another elderly woman became Operation Violet, a serial rape investigation. Police tested hundreds of suspects including Camesi, who was on remand in Mt Eden prison for assaulting his landlord, but no DNA matches were found. Then in April 1998 ESR told detectives they had a match with Camesi. By this time he was jailed in Hastings and when detectives interviewed him he admitted the charge.
