Sentenced to 150 hours of community work and 12 months intensive supervision in November 2007
Background
The Press | Thursday, 29 November 2007
A 23-year-old man was kicked as he left the Christchurch District Court after admitting six child pornography charges, a judge has been told.
Corey Andrew Challis, an architectural technician, was kicked in the shin and verbally abused by a person who had been in the court's public seats when Challis pleaded guilty last month, said defence counsel Richard McGuire. Court security staff were alerted for Challis's sentencing yesterday, when Judge Gary MacAskill ordered him to do 150 hours of community work and 12 months intensive supervision.
He will also be assessed for the STOP programme for sex offenders, will be forbidden to contact or be near children under 16 years, and will be allowed to access Internet sites only under supervision. Challis had admitted three charges of making an objectionable publication and three of possessing such material. Police searched his home and found a computer disk with 877 images of children, 746 of which featured the sexual exploitation of children. McGuire said Challis had already begun rehabilitation.
"The community and the courts take a dim view of this sort of offending because it victimises the children who are the subject of the images," said the judge. "It appears you have now come to recognise and accept that you must do something about your behaviour."

An architectural technician who owned up to an eight-year interest in child
pornography has admitted possessing images of children in sex acts.
In the Christchurch District Court, Corey Andrew Challis, 23, admitted three charges of making an objectionable publication, and three of possessing an objectionable publication.
Sergeant Ash Tabb said a police search of Challis's place turned up a computer disk with 877 images of children, 746 of them found to be objectionable and featuring the sexual exploitation of children. Challis admitted creating three folders of indecent material. He was remanded on bail for sentence on November 28.
