We are advised Clarke had undergone a 35 week Kia Marama therapy programme for child sex offenders while in prison in 2004 but was still assessed as being a high risk of sexual recidivism.
Be constantly vigilant many paedophiles and sex offenders will reoffend when released into the community despite undergoing treatment.
From the Waikato Times 22nd November 1997
A man who kidnapped, raped and beat a 15-year-old girl while on bail for similar offending has been jailed for 11 years. John Albert Thomas Clarke, 31, unemployed, admitted charges of abduction, rape, sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection, threatening to kill, indecent assault, and injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Offending against one woman, aged 24, occurred in December last year. The crimes against the young girl occurred in September this year, while Clarke was on bail for the December offences.
Jailing Clarke, Justice Panckhurst yesterday said the similarities between the two incidents were eerie. The December offending happened when the woman was at a function that Clarke was attending. Late in the evening the woman told the group she was with that she was going to take a taxi home. Clarke told her he would make sure she got a taxi safely, but got into the vehicle with her and invited himself into her home. Clarke made advances to the woman, which were rejected. He then approached her, punched her and threatened to kill her. He dragged her into her bedroom and ripped off her upper clothing.
Without warning Clarke suddenly stopped, apologised for his actions and suggested the woman call the police. The teenager was at a Christchurch sports function with friends and after a friend's mother went home, arrangements were made for Clarke to take her home. He stopped near Governors Bay and there was a violent struggle, Clarke partially strangling the girl and threatening to kill her. He suddenly stopped, apologised to the girl, then drove towards but then turned around. The girl's clothing was forcibly removed and she was indecently assaulted. Clarke again threatened to kill her. He drove back to Christchurch, dumping the girl and his car at Christchurch Hospital.
