Background
The Southland Times, 25th September 2009
An Invercargill man was yesterday sentenced to nine and a half years' jail with a minimum non-parole period of five and a half years, for the repeated rape and sexual violation of an intellectually disadvantaged teenager.
Gregory Donald Coffey, 38, appeared in the Invercargill District Court for sentence on representative charges of rape and sexual violation, and three charges of indecent assault. The offending occurred between March 13, 2006, and August 17 last year, when the girl was aged between 13 and 15 years.
Judge Kevin Phillips labelled the offending "reprehensible" and a "gross breach of trust". The offending occurred when Coffey, a taxi driver, returned home after all-night shifts. The offending had impacted on the victim's life greatly, and she had started to self-mutilate as a result, Judge Phillips said.
She felt dirty and ashamed, and had anger and trust issues, he said. Her intellect issues made the offending worse, he said. "You accepted that you probably took advantage of someone who didn't have the right mental age," he said.
Coffey's lawyer Peter Redpath said his client was deeply remorseful and ashamed of his behaviour. While the offending occurred during a low period in his life, Coffey had once been a good contributor to the community, having been a volunteer firefighter for nine years and scout leader for six years, he said. He offered to pay the girl $10,000 emotional harm reparation, which Judge Phillips accepted.
