Paeroa painter Graham Cottingham has been sentenced to four and-a-half years in prison for sexual offences against boys. Cottingham, 62, appeared before Judge Robert Wolff in the Hamilton District Court on Thursday having previously admitted two charges of sexual violation and two of inducing an indecent act. The charges related to boys aged eight and 14 and the offences occurred in May 2005. Cottingham performed oral sex once on each of the boys. Judge Wolff said the offending had an emotional effect on the boys. However he reduced Cottingham's sentence because he pleaded guilty early, showed empathy to the victims and was remorseful. "You have reached an age where the offending appears on the face of it to be somewhat out of character," Judge Wolff said.

We have been advised that he has a long previous history of offending against his own family. There have also been allegations of domestic violence stretching back many years
