Background
From the Waikato Times 10 June 2006
Indecent assaults carried out 30 years ago when the attacker was just 14 were finally punished yesterday. Dale Dauphin, 44, of Cambridge, was jailed for 12 months after admitting one charge of indecent assault on a five-year-old girl in the 1970s. Judge Robert Wolff described the acts as "an experiment" which Dauphin used for his own gratification. But he said Dauphin was later convicted in Australia and jailed for eight years for a similar offence.
Dauphin was sentenced in the Hamilton District Court after admitting one charge representing three indecent assaults on the girl. "A probation report says you show little remorse and little motivation to change," Judge Wolff said. "The community needs to be aware of the danger you pose to young people." Defence lawyer Ted Walsh emphasised Dauphin's youth at the time of the offending and the time that had passed since.
