Background
From Waikato Times story March 27th 2004
A paedophile who preyed on a boy with a mental age of nine has been jailed for four years and six months. Judge Cecilie Rushton, in Hamilton District Court, yesterday ordered Jack Jan Donker, who was 59 at the time of the offending last year, to serve two- thirds of his sentence before he can be released. Judge Ruston noted that Donker's guilty plea to two charges of indecent assault on a boy aged 13 and a charge of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection was the only mitigating factor.
She said Donker had worked his way into the home, after he was introduced to the boy's mother. The boy, who was aged between 13 and 14 at the time, had a mental age of nine. Donker allowed him to play on his computer and took him to his job. Judge Rushton noted the effect on the victim had been profound. According to his family he became violent, wasn't interested in attending school and was scared of Donker. Donker abused the boy over a six-month period and had moved in with the family by the time it was detected.
He was exposed by a person who knew his history. When interviewed by Child, Youth and Family staff, Donker confessed. The court heard his criminal history included two convictions in Auckland in 1991 for doing an indecent act on a boy and a charge of indecent assault. He was jailed for 20 months. In December last year he was convicted in Te Awamutu of lurking or loitering and sentenced to a month's jail. Donker's lawyer Warren Pyke said his client wanted to take part in the Christchurch prison's programme for sex offenders.
