Leslie Fitzgibbon, 24, unemployed, was jailed for four years for attempting to sexually violate the 14-year-old girl. Justice Moran said Fitzgibbon was a gang member and somewhat of a mystery because he was capable of good deeds. Richard James Jermyn, 22, unemployed, was given three years for detaining the 16-year-old without consent for sexual purposes. During the trial in Greymouth, Justice Moran discharged Jermyn on a charge of attempting to dissuade a witness from giving evidence by a threatening gesture on February 28, and Jermyn and Fitzgibbon on a charge of detaining the younger girl without her consent to have sexual intercourse with her
