Background
Story from the Christchurch Press 14th November 1996
A teenager who molested two young children was convicted in the Christchurch
District Court yesterday on two charges of indecent assault.
Rangi Tane Gardiner, 18, unemployed of Christchurch, pleaded guilty to the charges of indecently assaulting a boy aged three and a girl aged eight between September 26 and October 15 this year. Judge Stephen Erber remanded Gardiner in custody until November 21 for a probation report, victim impact report, and sentencing.
The police prosecutor, Sergeant Steve Goy, said the boy and girl were brother and sister. Gardiner had become a friend of the family in September and sometimes stayed overnight at the family's home. Gardner was staying at the house between September 26 and October 15. He got into bed with the three-year- old boy and indecently assaulted him.
Later, he found the girl sleeping. He checked to see if the children's caregiver was asleep before returning to the girl and indecently assaulting her over a period of 20 minutes. The girl remained asleep throughout. Sergeant Goy said Gardiner admitted the assaults when he was later questioned by police. He told the police he felt sickened by the incident and did not know why he had done it.
Gardiner was later convicted in May 2001 of indecency with a fourteen year old girl at Tahunanui Beach near Nelson earlier that year.
