Sentenced to 12 months home detention and 200 hours community work in September 2010
Background
From the Rotorua Daily Post 8th September 2010
A Rotorua man who groomed a 13-year-old girl for sex has been sentenced to 12 months' home detention and 200 hours' community work. Zack Graves, 19, appeared in the Rotorua District Court before Judge Chris McGuire after previously pleading guilty to a representative charge of unlawful sexual connection with a young girl and a charge of grooming a minor.
Judge McGuire said that when Graves and the girl first met, he would help her with her homework. Last December, a member of the girl's family told Graves to stop texting her. She skipped school one day to spend time with Graves, catching the school bus home. There were further meetings during which there was consensual sexual contact and one occasion when they had sexual intercourse.
When police first spoke to Graves, he admitted knowing she was 13. He said he loved her and denied grooming her for sex. Judge McGuire said Graves was preoccupied with internet pornography and had an attitude of entitlement. "There was a great deal of subterfuge and planning on your part to secretly meet up with the complainant." The complainant did not complete a victim impact statement and had colluded with Graves. "She was more than willing," Judge McGuire said. Graves' lawyer, Fraser Wood, said his client accepted responsibility and was remorseful.
