Sentenced to 6 years in September 2008
Background
From Hawkes Bay Today story of September 13 2008
A 22-year-old man who tried to rape a 6-year-old girl was sentenced to six years imprisonment in Napier District Court yesterday. Paul Mark Cecil Griffin pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted rape of a girl under the age of 12. Judge Tony Adeane told Griffin his offending had all the hallmarks of a predatory paedophile. Judge Adeane said Griffin befriended the girl's mother and attained a position of trust in her home. He then spent time playing with the girl so that she was comfortable with physical contact such as tickling.
On November 28, last year Griffin visited the child's home when she was there with a babysitter. He went into her room and started cuddling her until the babysitter intervened and then he took the child outside to play by a pool. When he was out of view of the house he tried to rape her before the girl's 10- year-old sister interrupted. Griffin told the sister not to tell anyone before running through the house past the babysitter while still doing up the fly on his pants. Judge Adeane rejected an application for name suppression, made by defence counsel Philip Jensen, saying that the application was intended to shelter Griffin from embarrassment.
