Sentenced to nine months in June 2008
Background
From the Manawatu Standard 27th June 2008
A man who committed an indecent act on an 11-year-old girl he considered a
"sister" put shame on his family, the Palmerston North District Court heard yesterday.
Simon Haitana, 25, was kicked out of a friend's home immediately after he was discovered in bed with the girl on August 10, 2007. They had both been sleeping on mattresses in the lounge. Crown prosecutor Paul Murray said Haitana was considered part of the girl's family and often stayed over at their house.
But when the girl's mother caught him "in the act" that night, kissing and touching her, he was asked to leave and the police were called. When spoken to by police he admitted the abuse and pleaded guilty in court. Haitana's lawyer, Andru Isac, said his family had to live with the shame of what he did and the stigma attached.
Haitana's mother sat alone in the gallery while her son - with long hair, a goatee and wearing a leather jacket - did not once lift his head. Judge Nevin Dawson sentenced him to nine months' imprisonment on the indecent act charge and two theft of petrol charges.
