Background
From Timaru Herald story 3rd April 2007
A former Pleasant Point teacher who indecently assaulted three boys had tarnished the image of male primary school teachers, Judge Murray Abbott said in the Timaru District Court yesterday. He said the offending of Leslie Ronald Hay, 57, would discourage men from entering primary school teaching at a time when there was a shortage of positive role models for young boys. Hay was sentenced to two years and two months imprisonment for indecently assaulting three boys under the age of 12 (five charges) and inducing one of the boys to do an indecent act on him between 1979 and 1984. Judge Abbott ordered Hay to pay the victims a total of $35,000 reparation. Hay met his victims while he was principal at Glentunnel Primary School in Central Canterbury where he lived next door with two young foster boys.
Hay became friends with the three victims, inviting them into his home and indecently touching them on more than one occasion. He told one victim it was okay to sleep in the same bed. Indecencies occurred as Hay lay naked next to the boy. Hay said it was their secret and told the boy that no one would believe him if he told anyone what had happened. Judge Abbott said Hay soon turned his sexual affections to another boy whom he assaulted as he sat on his knee listening to a record. A third boy was indecently assaulted at Hay's home and on school camp. Hay began teaching at Pleasant Point Primary School in May 1981. His third victim went to stay with Hay at his Cave home where further indecencies occurred. The court heard that Hay believed he was giving the boys pleasure. Judge Abbott said Hay offended for his own sexual gratification, and he was in a position of power and responsibility and parents relied on him to keep their children safe.
From Timaru Herald story 14th October 2008
FORMER Pleasant Point Primary School teacher Les Hay has been released on parole after serving 18 months of his sentence for historical sex offences. Hay, 58, was sentenced in April 2007 to two years and two months' imprisonment following his guilty pleas to five charges of indecently assaulting a boy and one charge of inducing a boy to do an indecent act. The offences occurred between 1979 and 1984. He was declined parole on his first appearance before the New Zealand Parole Board in December because he was then still engaged in the Kia Marama Programme. Hay completed the programme in May and was granted leave to come back to the parole board outside the normal 12 monthly cycle.
The board says it is satisfied Hay worked hard to address the causes of his offending and to change his behaviour. It says he has accepted personal responsibility for sexually abusing his victims and appreciates the impact his abusive behaviour has had on them. "He has also developed a comprehensive relapse prevention programme which demonstrates that he is aware of high risk situations and the challenges he may face on release. Conditions of Hay's parole include a ban on having contact with anyone under the age of 16 unless in the presence of another adult, aged over 18, and having been previously approved. Herald staff
