Sentenced to 7 months home detention in August 2011
Background
From Timaru Herald story 1st September 2011
A man who was found having a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old girl has been sentenced to home detention. Andrew Douglas Hill, 20, of Oamaru, appeared before Judge Paul Kellar in the Oamaru District Court yesterday on a charge of sexual connection with a minor. The court heard that Hill had been working at an Oamaru recreational facility when he encountered the girl. He was aged 19 at the time. The girl is now 14 years old.
"You commenced a casual friendship, which over a period of some months culminated in a number of encounters where sexual intercourse took place," Judge Kellar said. He described it as "relatively serious" offending. He acknowledged that Hill had expressed remorse and was a person of otherwise good character. "Youth and prior good character justify a [sentence] discount." He said it was not a case that involved a large age disparity or signs of grooming. Hill was sentenced to seven months' home detention. He was also given a first strike warning under the three strikes legislation.
