Background
From the Christchurch Press 22nd August 1998
A ''serial defiler of young girls'' has been sentenced to eight years jail for molesting six girls in the 1960s and 1970s, including the forceful rape of two of them when they were nine years old. George Mutu Hopkinson, 68, pleaded guilty in the Christchurch District Court to three charges of rape, one of attempted rape, two of indecent assault, and two of inducing an indecent act on girls under the age of 12.
Pip Hall, defending, said there had been ''literally generations of child sex abuse in his wider family'', with Hopkinson and his siblings having been molested as children. His brother was serving a jail term for molesting some of the same complainants around the same time as the defendant. He described the case as sad and tragic, but said Hopkinson was remorseful and had completed part of a pedophile rehabilitation project before the abuse was reported to the police. His partner was standing by him.
Judge Graeme Noble said Hopkinson had perpetrated a continuous series of serious sexual offences against girls aged between five and 15. ''The victim-impact reports present a bleak picture of your negative impacts on them in their formative years,'' he said. ''You emerge as a serial defiler of young girls. This was callous, brutal, and degrading behaviour, where you systematically destroyed the childhoods of these complainants. ''I accept there was a pervasive atmosphere of sexual abuse in your family,'' the judge said. The length of the jail term was affected by the maximum penalty of 14 years for rape at the time. The maximum now is 20 years.
