Sentenced to 120 hours community service and 12 months supervision in February 2009
Background
From Hawkes Bay Today story 10th February 2009
A 41-year-old Hastings salesman has been sentenced to 120 hours' community service for possessing more than 750 images of child pornography. Stephen Raymond Jeffers had pleaded guilty to 10 charges of possessing objectionable materials in the Hastings District Court on Thursday.
A summary of facts, not read in court, said Jeffers shared an objectionable Image with a Department of Internal Affairs inspector on November 19, 2007. Jeffers' house was searched on March 19, 2008, after the department tracked his address through his Internet service provider.
Two computers were seized, as well as floppy disks and CDs containing more than 750 images of children engaged in sexual activity or posed in a sexualised way. Jeffers later acknowledged the presence of photos of young girls on the disks and also ownership of the computer equipment.
Defence lawyer Trent Petherwick said Jeffers' distribution of images had been "very limited". Jeffers had no prior convictions and had since undertaken psychiatric counselling. Judge Richard Watson sentenced Jeffers to the community work and 12 months' supervision. He was also ordered to undergo any counselling as directed by a psychiatrist or probation officer.
